AM I A CANDIDATE?
- Patients diagnosed with essential blepharospasm or hemifacial spasm that causes frequent, disabling eyelid closure are candidates for treatment. Dr. Gordon will differentiate blepharospasm from other conditions causing similar symptoms and recommend the most appropriate therapeutic approach.
THE PROCEDURE
Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections are the first-line treatment, placed with precision into the orbicularis oculi muscle around the eye to reduce muscle activity and prevent spasms. Injections are performed in-office and take effect within three to seven days. For patients with refractory blepharospasm, surgical myectomy — partial removal of the orbicularis muscle — may be recommended.
