What Is A Canthoplasty?
Ideally, the inner corner of the eye is directly in line with the outer corner or even a few degrees higher. In a drooping eye, the outer corner of the eye is several degrees below the inner corner. Canthoplasty is an eyelid surgery that lifts the outer corner of the eye to create a more awake and youthful appearance. Patients may also consider a canthoplasty for cosmetic reasons like creating the popular cat eye look where the corner of the eye slants upward. Dr. James Gordon, an oculofacial plastic surgeon with offices in Westchester County and New York City, performs canthoplasty to correct medical concerns and for aesthetic benefits.
Canthoplasty Reviews
"Whenever I do anything serious, such as consider an operation like this, I do a ton of research. I spent days reviewing all the different plastic surgeons in Manhattan to figure out who would be best to do a potential blepharoplasty on my lower lids. I wanted someone with a ton of experience, recognized for excellence in their field, honest, and also someone young enough such that they still had great motor skills and a very precise hand.
That search led me to Dr. James Gordon. I live in Brooklyn, but I went all the way out to Marmaroneck in Westchester to see him (not too bad actually, just take the train to Grand Central, then a 1 hour MTA train to Mamaroneck). Out of all the doctors, he was the only one that far, but I decided he was worth it, I honestly could not find one person who wasn't singing his praises.
Here's what happened when I got there for the free consultation. He told me he wasn't going to do a blepharoplasty on me. And that was a pretty incredible thing to hear. Many doctors, just like other professions, have people who will try to upsell you, convince you that you need something more, or even make you feel bad about yourself so you consider something you don't need.
Dr. Gordon was the opposite. I've always been self-conscious about dark circles under my eyes and wrinkles under them when I smile. He talked to me about this, told me surgery wasn't the way, suggested some other alternatives if I really wanted them, but even said "Hey, you don't even need "

"i feel so much better - Westchester, NY - The office is completely professional. I immediately felt comfortable. Im not the ordinary patient I had two floor fractures on my left eye that left my under eye very puffy. I thought me as a patient would be a difficult high risk case… This doctor is not only handsome, he is educated, professional, humorous, certified, and case sensitive. I made the best choice to come to an eye surgeon to help me because I did not want surgery. I look and feel refreshed!!"

"I really don't think there's a better doctor than Dr. Gordon out there. The day I met Dr. Gordon was one of my best days and decision of my life. Dr. Gordon literally "uplifted" me with upper and lower blepharoplasty, along with skin laser around the sensitive areas around my eyes. He is a master of the eyes who knows not just the anatomy well, but also understands the art of the aesthetic aspect. The outcome is amazing, better than I had expected. I do not look like I had eye surgery. Nothing was too obvious. Everything seems so natural. Because Dr. Gordon is also a trainer for other doctors, he was so skilled in the way he used laser around my eyes to remove my wrinkles and uneven skin tone. Most importantly, all the procedures were done within my budget without any pressure. Truly the best!"

How Is A Canthoplasty Performed?
Canthoplasty may be performed in Dr. Gordon’s minor procedures room with local anesthesia and numbing eye drops, or in his accredited surgical facility. To lift a drooping eye corner, Dr. Gordon begins by making a small incision in the outer corner of the eyelid to expose the lower canthal tendon. Once the tendon is cut, the lower lid will be lifted into position and the incisions will be closed.
What Should I Expect from A Canthoplasty?
The procedure usually takes about 1 – 2 hours to complete. Patients should expect to have temporary bruising and swelling around their eyes for the first week. Some patients may also notice a change in their eyesight, but this should resolve on its own. Patients should also use glasses instead of contact lenses for the first few weeks after the procedure.

Why is massage important?
To help the eyelid heal properly, patients should massage their eyelids in an upward direction for 3 – 5 minutes at least 3 times a day for the first 2 weeks after their surgery. This will help the lid maintain its position and prevent the skin from losing tone.
Should I Choose Canthoplasty or Eyelid Surgery?
An upper or lower blepharoplasty removes the excess skin, fat, and tissue from the eyelid for a smoother look without wrinkles or sagging skin. A canthoplasty changes the shape of the eyes by cutting the cathal tendon and lifting the corner of the eye.
Is Canthoplasty Covered by Insurance?
If the patient is having canthoplasty to correct a medical condition, such as an ectropion eyelid or chronic dry eyes, their health insurance may cover some of the cost of the surgery. Insurance will not cover a canthoplasty if it is being performed only for cosmetic reasons.
